The dimensions of the EarthBox® gardening system are 75 cm Long x 35 cm Wide x 28 cm High.
You should never remove the cover until you´re ready to replant. The EarthBox® gardening system cover is an integral part of the EarthBox® gardening system. The cover helps to keep your growth medium moist; it keeps the weather away from your plant food and the cover helps to stop weeds and other unwanted plants from getting into your EarthBox® gardening system.
We recommend that only coir be used as a growth medium in the EarthBox® gardening system. Most potting mixes are of poor quality and irregular composition, containing insufficient wicking agent to effectively transport water from the EarthBox® gardening system water reservoir up to the plant roots. If you are able to source a potting mix that has high peat moss content, this could be used as a growth medium.
Coir, however, is best and cheapest and is available from our online store or through firstname.lastname@example.org.
Dolomite, or hydrated lime, can be used for any plant, although it is critical for healthy tomatoes. Tomato plants need a lot of calcium in order to produce healthy fruit; dolomite satisfies this requirement. A bag of dolomite is provided with the EarthBox® gardening system kit.
No problem. The EarthBox® gardening system uses its own growth medium which is supplied with the original box and can be replaced by ordering from our online store or through email@example.com. In fact, you should never substitute the EarthBox® gardening system growth medium with normal soil. The system will no longer work as designed, if you do.
The EarthBox® gardening system plants grow anywhere — no matter how poor the soil in your area. Many people have tremendous EarthBox® gardening system gardens on their patios, balconies and "stoeps".
The EarthBox® gardening system is supplied with a very special, organic plant food that has been tried and tested and works well. Each time you plant in the EarthBox® gardening system, you would typically use 3 cups of this special organic plant food or 2 cups of any other chemical fertilizer for vegetables. The three numbers of the elements making up the fertilizer content should be in the range of 3 to 12 (e.g.: 12-8-10, 10-10-10) and the fertilizer should be suitable for use with vegetables and flowers.. After you have applied the plant food in a strip on top of the growth medium, no additional plant food needs to be added for the next 12 months. The special organic plant food supplied with the EarthBox® gardening system is available through our online store or from firstname.lastname@example.org.
With the EarthBox® gardening system system you fertilize only once — when you first set it up. Thereafter you only need to replace the plant food strip once every 12 months. Use three cups of organic fertilizer (or one bag of Special Organic Plant Food as supplied by EarthBox® gardening system Africa) and the plants will have just as much as they want, when they want it. You can´t over or under feed.
Avoid fertilizers that are mixed with water.
The special organic plant food supplied with the EarthBox® gardening system (available through our online store or email@example.com ) has been tried and tested and is preferred for the African situation. There are several other brands of organic fertilizer on the market, however — typically 3 cups of which should be used per box before planting.
The short answer: No. Years of scientific research have gone into determining the type, quantity and placement of plant food to maximize plant health and production. Liquid plant foods defeat the purpose of the EarthBox® gardening system system as nutrients are not provided on a constant, stable basis. 3 cups of dry organic fertilizer are all your plants will need in the EarthBox® gardening system.
Absolutely. Simply remove your old plants, the old plant food strip and some of the surrounding growth medium. Decide what you are going to plant in your EarthBox® gardening system and refer to the Plant Placement Guide to know where the plant food and plants need to be placed. Top the EarthBox® gardening system off with some fresh growth medium (supplied with the replanting kit) and create a growth medium mound running lengthways down the centre of the box. Decide on where the plant food strip will be placed dependant on the crop and plant placement pattern. Pour the entire bag of special organic plant food (supplied with the replanting kit) in a 5 cm -wide strip on top of the growing medium and cover gently with a small amount of the surrounding growing medium. Re-cover the box with one of the elasticized mulch covers (supplied with the replanting kit) and replant. EarthBox® gardening system Africa recommends that you use the same growth medium for 4 growing seasons and the EarthBox® gardening system can be used for many years.
Refer to the Plant Placement Guide. If the plants have the same optimal number and configuration, they can be successfully mixed in the EarthBox® gardening system. It is always advisable to talk to your local nursery to ascertain which plants will work best as companion plants.
You can´t over water an EarthBox® gardening system, as long as you never try and water the plants directly. Keep the reservoir filled through the fill tube. When the plants are small, add water every few days. As they grow larger, add water more often. You can easily assess the water usage by the time it takes the water to pour from the overflow hole. Never let the reservoir go dry.
The EarthBox® gardening system has been designed so that you can´t over water and the only way to underwater is to let the water reservoir run dry. Remember, plants are taking the exact amount of water they need from the reservoir — no more and no less.
Resist the temptation to second-guess the system, as this will only lessen results.
Water the EarthBox® gardening system when it is convenient for you. Just remember to never let the reservoir run dry.
Most varieties require a higher pH level of growth medium. Simply mix one cup of dolomite or hydrated lime to the top 5-10 cm of growth medium (before adding the plant food strip) to raise the pH. The EarthBox® gardening system will do the rest.
Through years of experimentation, we have developed the optimal number and arrangement of each type of plant. Please refer to the Plant Selection Chart for a complete list. You can mix and match plant types that have the same optimal number and arrangement on the chart, as long as you don´t plant more seedlings in one box than the optimal number for each type.
(Eg: You could plant 3 bell pepper seedlings and 3 broccoli seedlings in the same container, as the optimal number to plant for both is 6 seedlings). It is always preferable when mixing plants to check with your local nursery which plants grow well together.
Tomatoes, eggplant, cucumbers, beans and other vine plants need support. EarthBox® gardening system Africa will soon be offering an optional staking system that integrates with the EarthBox® gardening system container. This will eliminates the need for awkward wire plant cages or trellises. Meanwhile ask your local nursery what they would suggest as a temporary staking system from your EarthBox® gardening system plants.
Tomatoes will split when (1) there is lots of heat and lots of rain or (2) if very dry weather is followed by two days of rainfall.
It is really caused by the drastic change in the amount of water in the fruit along with the heat. You can cover your plants with shade cloth to cut the amount of heat and always remember to keep the water reservoir full so the plants always have a consistent supply of water.
The black on the bottom of your tomatoes is called "blossom end rot." It is caused by a lack of calcium and other ingredients from the growth medium. Adding 2 cups of dolomite (hydrated lime) to the growth medium before planting can help prevent the blossom end rot from forming. In the event the blossom end rot still presents itself mix 1 cup of dolomite (hydrated lime) to a 4 litres of water and add that to the reservoir the next time you water.
In order to prepare your EarthBox® gardening system for a very cold winter, we recommend that you remove the old plants, cover and plant food. Place a new, uncut cover (there are 2 covers supplied with each EarthBox® gardening system) on your EarthBox® gardening system to prevent the growth medium becoming saturated or contaminated while unplanted, and drain the remaining water through the overflow hole.
If little or no natural sunlight is available, use metal halide lights which produce a strong output of the blue spectrum.
This type of light will result in strong plant growth.
Since the growth medium in the EarthBox® gardening system is covered, weeds don´t even have a chance to start. There´s never any need to pull weeds or use herbicides.
Spray with BT (Bacillus thuringiensis), a very good all-purpose solution. This is not a chemical and will do no harm if sprayed on the skin.
The EarthBox® gardening system is currently available through firstname.lastname@example.org and through our online store. It is our goal to have them available at retail stores across the continent in the near future.
